History & Family Tradition
As tradition goes, coffee and the Lamastus family have been one and the same ever since 1918 when Robert Lamastus planted the first coffee tree at the now-famed Elida Estate Coffee plantation. Almost a century has gone by and now 3 generations of
the Lamastus Family are still working the farm, Thatcher,
the grandfather, Wilford, the son and Wilford Jr.
The Elida Geisha Washed got scores over 96 points by 5 different judges, and 3 judges gave the coffee over 97 points, including 97.75 by Taroh Suzuki of Saza who said that it was his highest score ever, and Will Young from Campos Coffee called the Unicorn coffee with a score of 97. Mike Perry of Klatch coffee also scored this coffee 97 points. Three veteran experienced judges from three different continents. We invite you to indulge yourselves and try this one-of-a-kind coffee that most certainly will fulfill your highest expectations. The Farm:
For several years, we have offered the third-wave coffee roaster our super-specialty Elida coffees: Washed, Honey and Natural. Our small and micro-roasters from all over the world keep coming back for their micro-lots. They cup and pick their preferred lots based on cup attributes. This 2018 season, we did over 450 separate lots and are shipping each lot separated to our roasters all over the world. The coffees are produced under a unique climate and location for several reasons: the farm is located at a very high elevation (one of the highest coffee farms in Panamá), it is grown in rich young volcanic soils, the temperatures are low, there is lots of fog and mist during the dry season, the coffee trees are surrounded by virgin rainforest populated by a great number of beneficial microorganisms, and cold nights allow the trees to spend 4 1/2 to 6 ½ years to produce(2-4 years longer than average), extending the ripening time by a month—which is reflected in the development of the bean’s rich flavor profile. All of these unique growing conditions show in a distinguished cup. The Volcan Baru National Park is one of the highest volcanoes in Central America, with 14,000ha and 7 different climate zones depending on the elevation, and both of our farms are a part of it. http://www.lamastusfamilyestates.com |
Cupping Notes: | Jazmin, pomarosa, saturated sweetness, superior cleanliness, sparkling flavor that range from berry and citrus to mango, papaya and peach. A very distinct bergamot-like finish is typical in the cup profile. |
